1 Claim. (Cl. 281-34) This invention relates to books and more particularly to a cover therefor.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a combined cover jacket for a book that is provided with a purse on the exterior side thereof.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a cover jacket for a Bible having a separate rosary bead compartment associated therewith so as to prevent damage to the book Bible and loss or misplacement of the rosary beads.
Still a further object of the present invention is to provide a cover jacket of the above type having self contained positioning means on the inside thereof for detachably securing the book in proper supported relationship therewith.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a cover jacket for books bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cover jacket made in accordance with the present invention in a completely open position ready to be applied to a book;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the jacket shown in Figure 1 in phantom lines in operative use with a book;
Figure 3 is an enlarged plan view of the inside of the cover jacket shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken along line 44 of Figure 3.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a combined cover jacket for books made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a main panel 12 having at one end a rectangular shaped end portion,
an intermediate portion, and a trapezoidal end portion at the opposite end thereof constructed from a sheet of flexible waterproof and soil resistant material, such as flexible sheet plastic. A smaller sheet of similar material 14 and of rectangular configuration is secured to the inside of one end of the main panel 12 so as to provide a rectangular shaped pocket for slidably receiving one cover leaf 15 of a book 16 that is to be incased therewithin. The other cover leaf 18 of the book is slidably received within a loop formed by a strip 17 of similar material and of rectangular configuration that extends transversely of the main panel 12 intermediate the ends thereof. The opposite free end of the main panel 12 is formed with tapered side walls so as to provide a flap 20 of trapezoidal configuration and having a female snap fastener element 21 carried adjacent to the outer end thereof.
The outside of the main panel adjacent to the one end thereof of rectangular configuration is provided with a male snap fastener 22 for engagement with the female snap element 21 of the cover flap 20. This formed rectangular shaped pocket is provided with a flap 26 of trapezoidal configuration having a female snap fastener element 27 that cooperates with a male snap fastener element 28 on the outside of the pocket panel 24.
Another small rectangular panel 30 is folded back upon itself and secured to the outside of the main panel 12 directly opposite the loop forming strip 17. This panel is also provided with a closure flap 32 of trapezoidal configuration having a female snap fastener 33 for engagement with a male snap fastener element 34 on the outside of the panel 30.
The various panels and the periphery of the main panel 12 may be similarly bound with a continuous strip 38 of like material so as to further enhance the appearance of the jacket and to prevent fraying or tearing of the edges thereof.
In actual use, the jacket 10 is applied to the book 16 which may or may not be a Bible, by sliding one cover leaf 15 into the pocket formed by the section of material 14. The other cover leaf 18 is guided into the slot or loop formed by the strip 25. By then closing the covers of the book, the flap 20 may be wrapped around the front thereof and secured in closing relationship with the rest of the main panel by the engagement of the snap fastener elements 21, 22. If desired, one of the pockets formed by the small rectangular panels 24, 30 may be used to enclose rosary beads, while the other such pocket can be used for any other accessory or article. When not used for a Bible, both pockets may be used as a purse for carrying various articles of cosmetics, change, and the like. Of course, the size of each pocket will depend upon the over all size of the jacket so as to be in proportion thereto.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A jacket type cover for books comprising, in combination, a main panel of flexible sheet material, said panel having one end portion of rectangular configuration, an intermediate portion with parallel side walls. and an opposite free end portion of trapezoidal configuration, a plurality of spaced openings arranged about the periphery of the three side edges of said main panel, leaving the free side of said trapezoidal end portion free of perforations, pocket means on the inside of said rectangular end portion for releasably supporting one leaf of a book, when inserted therein, a plurality of spaced openings in the outer side and outer ends of said pocket means, said pocket closed and secured at its outer long side and both ends to said main panel by the intermediate portion of a continuous strip of flexible material woven through the spaced openings in the edge portions thereof and said main panel, preventing fraying and tearing of the edges thereof, said pocket being open towards the opposite end of said main panel, a rectangular shaped stationary, flexible strip band extending across the inside of the intermediate portion of said panel defining a loop slidably receiving the other cover of said book when inserted therein, a plurality of spaced openings in the end portions of said strip band, the ends of said strip band secured to said panel by portions of said continuous strip of flexible material woven through the openings in its end portions thereof and the panel, said trapezoidal shaped free end portion of said panel forming a flap 2,925,932 a I i with tapering ends and a short free side, a plurality of spaced openings in said tapering ends, the end portions of said continuous strip of flexible material woven through the openings in the tapering ends, the short free side of Said trapezoidal shaped free end portion being less in length than the closed end of the pocket at the opposite end of said main panel, the free side edge portion of said flap being folded back upon the adjacent portion of said trapezoidal end portion and being free of perforations along its edge is secured to said trapezoidal end portion solely by the base end of a female snap fastener, said flap overlaps said rectangular end portion of said panel and completely encloses said book when said panel is applied upon and around said book, releasable fasteners secured in each of said panel end portions effecting means to lock said panel end portions in overlapped positionand enclosing said book Within said jacket type cover when in a closed position, the fastenersecured on the rectangular end portion consisting of a male snap 183* tener, and the fastener on the said trapezoidal flap consisting of said female snap fastener, an outwardly extending pull tab secured solely to the free end portion of said trapezoidal shaped end of the main panel by said base end of said female snap fastener for facilitating in the opening and closing of the flap during use.
