(en)A process for separating and removing substantial amounts of magnesium and other ion impurities from wet process phosphoric acid of 35-45% P 2 O 5 content is provided. The process steps comprise: (a) heating the acid while maintaining the acid at a concentration of 35-45% P 2 O 5 by the addition of water for a time sufficient to effect removal of silicon as fluosilicic acid and/or silicon tetrafluoride, thereby forming a stripped acid; (b) precipitating ralstonite from the heated stripped acid; and (c) separating the precipitated ralstonite from the acid.
