This invention relates to improvements in vanity cases for carrying cosmetics such as face powder, rouge, or the like; and the inv vention has reference more particularly, to an improved means for detachably retaining within the body of a vanity case a cosmetic compact.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a simple, cheap and neat case, in connection with the main body or holding section of which is provided a novel means for detachably retaining and holding, in operative seated position therein, a compact of a desired or selected cosmetic.

Referring to the said drawii'igs the reference character 5 indicates the main body or holding section of the vanity case, which is provided with an annular side wall (3. Said side wall (3 is provided, in suitable location, with an inwardly projected retaining tit or step 7, which is spaced upwardly from the bottomtloor of the main body or holding sec tion 5. The reference character 14 indicates a cover. section which is adapted to cooperate with the main body or holding section 5 to close over the open face thereof. The periphery said cover section 14 is provided with a tubular hinge knuckle 15, adapted to he alined with thehinge knuckles 13 of the main body or holding section 5, sothat a hinge pintle 16 may be passed therethrough, thus pivotally or hingedly securing said cover section to the main body or holding section. It is the usual practice to provide the cover section with a mirror fitting 17.
The vanity case, as above described, is adapted to hold a compact or cake 18 of a desired cosmetic, such as face powder, rouge or the like. Usually the compact or cake 18 is mounted on a backing plaque or support 19, as shown. To insert such compact in the main body or holding section, so that the same is retained in place by the retaining devices above described, one portion of the marginal edge portion of the compact is engaged by the spring-like arcuate retaining tongue 8 and beneath the lip 9, and the compact is then pressed. downwardly into the body or holding section 5, so that the opposite marginal portion thereof will snap under the retaining tit or stop 7. The resiliency of the retaining tongue is such that on v a tension or pressure exerted against the compact to hold the same engaged with the retaining tit or stop 7.
Referring now to Figure 4, l have shown therein a somewhat modified form of the spring-like retaining tongue. In this form a resilient arcuate tongue 20 is struck out from the free marginal portion of the side wall 6 of the main body or holding section 5, at a point diametrically opposite the position of the retaining tit or stop 7. This tongue 20 is curved so that its free end 21 extends downwardly toward the bottom floor of the main body or holding section 5, terminating short of the latter.
The construction of the retaining tongue 8 with the keeper lip 9, as shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, is quite satisfactory for use in connection with convex forms of 001m pacts, but, even with such forms of compacts, and especially with flat faced compacts, I prefer the form of retaining tongue 20 with downwardly directed free end 21, as shown in Figure 4, since the free end 21 of the tongue 20" is adapted to bear and thrust directly against the periphery of the compact so that the tension 01: the tongue tends to move the compact bodily toward the tit or stop 7, whereby its opposite marginal edge portion is held firmly engaged beneath the latter.

In a vanity case having a main body provided with an upstanding peripheral wall to form a compact receiving compartment, an inwardly directed stop means connected with said wall and spaced above the floor of said main body, and a resilient retaining means in the form of a tongue struck out of the free marginal portion of said wall at a point opposing the position of said stop thus described my invention, I
means, said tongue being lnwardly and downwardly turned to provide a free end portion to engage one side of a compact and by its exerted tension hold the latter with its opposite side thrust and engaged beneath said stop means.
2. In a vanity case having a main body provided with an upstanding peripheral wall to form a compact receiving compartment, an inwardly directed stop means connected with said wall and spaced above the floor of said main body, a resilient retaining means in the form of a tongue struck out 01? the free marginal portion of said wall at a point opposing the position of said stop means, said tongue being inwardly and downwardly turned to provide a free end portion to engage one side of a compact and by its exerted tension hold the latter with its opposite side thrust and engaged beneath said stop means, a hinge plate to span the space in said wall from which said tongue springs, means for securing said hinge plate to said wall, said hinge plate having hinge knuckles, a cover section to close said main body, said cover section having hinge knuckle means to cooperate with the knuckles of said hinge plate, and a pintle for operatively joining said knuckles.
