A further object of the present invention is to provide a superior device of the character referred to and characterized by simplicity of its automatic mechanism and also by the ruggedness .and reliability thereof.

The particular variable image-observing device herein chosen for illustration constitutes one of the species of a broader invention set forth in my copending application Ser. No. 275,135, filed May 23, 1939, and comprises a substantially-circular skeletonized assembly-plate l5 provided on its under face with a plurality of leg-sockets I6 each of rwhich has entered into it the upper end of a leg or support Il of any suitable type.y The Ysaid assembly-plate l5 has interior portions skeletonized as shown forthe purpose of lightness and clearance. Rigidly mounted upon the upper face of the assembly-plate l5 adjacent oppositerim-portions thereof isa bridge-like seat-carrying' member i8 provided with an upstandingcentral boss i9 having a central bearing-passagell extending vertically and comprising a relativelysmall diameter lower portion 20a, and an upperA 25-` portionb of relatively-large diameter.

Housed Within the relatively-large upper por-- tion ilhof the bearing-passage 20 is a helical spring 22 which encircles the relatively-small diameter lower portion, Zia of the vertical shaft 2l and thrusts at its upper end against the under side ofthe collar-like portion 2lb of the said shaft and yieldingly urges the latter upwardly. The upward movement ofthe vertical shaft 2l under the urge of the helical spring '22 is limited by the engagement of the collar-like portion 2lb of thef's'aid shaft with the underface of a cap 23 removably secured to'the upper end of the boss i9 Vof the seat-carrying member i3 as is clearly shown in Fig. 5 ofthe drawings.
Rigidly attached to the upper portion of the 50 vertical shaftv 2| by means of a set screw 24 or its equivalent, is a seat-.carrying head 25 of substanltially,-tu'fo'ular form and having an inturned flange 25 vat its lower end and a disk-like topplate 27 at yits upper end. Rigidly secured to the 55 upper face of the disk-like top-plate 21 is a seat-frame 28 (Fig. 5). Securely attached to the upper surface of the seat-frame 28 just referred to, is a seat 29 preferably suitably padded and having a back-rest 39 against which a poser may lean.
As thus constructed and arranged the seat 29 is free to be turned by a poser about the vertical shaft 2| as a center and in either direction from its normal central position in which it is shown in Figs. l to 5 inclusive. Furthermore the seat 29, and its as ociated parts, is free for slight vertical movement for a purpose as will hereinafter appear, since the vertical shaft 2| is, as before described, capable of slight vertical slid.. ing movement in the boss I9 of the seat-carrying member I8.
Depending from the seat 29 is a cylindrical skirt 3| which serves to conceal the major portion of the internal mechanism beneath the said seat and which is provided with an arcuate slot 35a through which the rear end of a mirrorcarrying arm 32 projects.
Theassembly-plate |5 before described is provided adjacent its front edge with an upstanding boss 33 in which is mounted a stud 34 extending vertically through the forward end of the mirror-carrying arm 32 and serving to pivotally connect the said arm to the seat-structure.
- vIt is to be noted that the pivot point of the mirror-carrying arm 32, namely, the stud 34, is eccentrically positioned with respect to the pivotpoint (the vertical shaft 2|) of the seat 29 and is located within the confines; of the area covered thereby.
Intermediate its inner and outer ends the mirrer-carryingr arm 32 is formed with two laterally-extending fingers, 35-35 each of which carries a roller 36 riding upon the upper surface of a trackway `31 constituted by a portion of the assembly-plate |5 adjacent the rear portion thereof andv extending concentrically with respect to the eCcentrically-located stud 34.
Intermediate the stud` 34 and the vertical shaft 2|, the mirror-carrying arm 32 is provided with ay coupling-slot 38 into which projects a couplingpin 39 rigidly mounted, but with capacity for vertical adjustment, in aboss 49 formed upon the peripheryv of the` seat-carrying head 25 and extending below the inturned flange 26 thereof, as is clearly shown in Fig. 5.
The outer end of the mirror-carrying arm 32 is'formed with an upstanding tubular sleeve 4| into which fits, with capacity for turning movement and vertical withdrawal and installation therein, a tubular stern 42 rigidly attached to and depending from a relatively-short horizontal arm 43 of a` vertical tubular mirror-carrying post 44. Secured to the upper portion of the post 44 is a mirror-frame 45 carrying a mirror 46 in its forward face which mirror. is preferably of the plane type. Mounted in the rear face of the mirrorframe 45 is a magnifying mirror 41 which, in a manner as will hereinafter appear, is adapted to be faced about so as to face towards the seat 29 if desired.
43 carrying a socket 49 mounting an incandescent electric bulb 59 which is adapted to illuminate a poser positioned upon the seat 29, when properly energized in a` manner as will hereinafter appear.
Leading from the socket 49 of the bulb 59 are two wires 5| and 52 soldered or otherwise electrically connected respectively to a conductingrod 53 and a conducting-tube 54 as is clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The said conducting-rod 53 is centrally mounted in the tubular stem 42 and is electrically insulated from the conducting-tube 54 which surrounds it, by an insulating-tube 55. The said conducting-tube 54 is in turn electrically insulated from the tubular stem 42 by means of an interposed insulatingtube 56.
Bearing against the lower end of the conducting-rod 53 is a brush 51 mounted upon the outer end of a resilient metallic arm 58 which is secured at its forwarder fixed end to an insulatingblock 59 secured to the mirror-carrying arm 32 before referred to. The said insulating-block 59 also carries a second resilient metallic arm 60 which carries a brush 6| at its outer end for engagement with the lower edge of the conducting-tube 54. Attached to the resilient arm 58 is an electricywire 62 which leads to one prong B3 of an electric plug 64 of any suitable type and adapted to be plugged into a source of electric current. Similarly the complemental resilient arm 69 has electrically connected to it, an electric Wire 65 leading to one terminal of a tilting mercury switch 66 carried at the outer end of a lever 6 1 which ispivotally mounted upon a radial arm 58 o'ifsettingfrom the seat-carrying member I8 as is shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. Ihe opposite terminal of the mercury switch 66 is connected by means of an electric Wire 69 to the remaining prong 19 of the electricplug 64.
The end of the lever 61 opposite the end at n which the mercury switch 66 is carried, is provided with a roller 1I which is adapted to be engaged by the under surface of the inturned ange 26 of the seat-carrying head 25 before referred to.
For the purpose of normally preventing the turning of the mirror-carrying post 44 relative to the upstanding sleeve 4| of the mirror-carrying 32, the horizontal arm 43 of the said post 44 is provided with la downwardly-extending V-shaped coupling-lug 12 fitting into a similarly shaped but upwardly-opening coupling-notch 13 formed in the upper edge of the said sleeve 4|. In this manner the mirror-carrying post 44 (and the parts carried thereby) is releasably held in definite relationship with respect to the mirrorcarrying arm 32 though its position may be changed by drawingthe said post 44 upwardly to removevthev coupling-lug 12 from the couplingnotch 13.
For the convenience of a hairdresser, beautician or the like,. the mirror-carrying post 44 is preferably provided at a point immediately below the mirror-frame 45 with a tray 14 in which may be kept hairpins, cosmetics, or the like in convenient position for use by a person other than the poser seated upon the seat 29.
As thus constructed and arranged the parts are organized as a unit, though the invention contemplates other forms, provided however that in all instances the mirror-carrying arm 32 or its equivalent is mounted for movement about a center which is eccentric with respect to the center of a seat such for instance as 29 whereby, without the employment of complex mechanisms and without appreciable lost motion, the mirror 46 or its equivalent may b-e moved to change its angular-relationship with respect to the seat and reflect a variety of views to a mirror such as the ordinary dressing table mirror, a suitable wall mirror, or the like.
With the particular mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, immediately that a poser is seated upon the seat 29 the said seat will be depressed by the weight of the person and overcome the helical spring 22 and eiect the tilting of the lever 1 and hence of the mercury switch 6G, with the result that an electric circuit through the bulb 5t! will be completed and the said bulb will be energized to illuminate the rear of the poser.
After a poser is seated upon the seat 29, such poser may cause the mirror 46 to sweep part way around the rear of the said seat by turning the latter. The turning of the seat in a clockwise direction from its intermediate position will cause the mirror 46 and associated parts to swing around the stud 34 in a counterclockwise direction into the position shown, for instance, by the broken lines A in Fig. 3. In a similar manner a counterclockwise turning of the seat 29 and its associated parts will effect the clockwise movement of the mirror 46 and associated parts into a position such, for instance, as that indicated by the broken lines B in Fig. 3; it being understood, of course, that the mirror 46 may assume substantially an infinite number of angular relationships dependent upon the degree to which the said seat 29 or its equivalent is moved.
For the purpose of convenience of description let it be assumed that the mirror 46 has been shifted into the position A in which itiwill be noted that light from the rear or partial prole of a poser on the said seat will be reflected along the line c to the said mirror and will then be reected back along the line d to the observing- .mirror 15 wherein the poser may observe the reflection.
If desired, a poser may face toward the mirror 45 and observe therein reflections of the rear and partial sides of his or her person as reflected from the mirror 15.
In the event that it is desired to bring a mirror closer to the poser to increase the scale of the reflection, the mirror-carrying post 44 may be slightly lifted to disengage the coupling-lug 12 from the coupling-notch 13, and then turned through an arc of about 180 into the position in which it is indicated by broken lines in Fig. 2.
As before noted and as will be apparent from the foregoing considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, I have discovered that by mounting the mirror 46 or its equivalent for movement eccentrically with respect to the center of the seat 29 or its equivalent, much of the complex mechanism which would otherwise be required to effect the proper angular relationship of the mirror 46 or its equivalent, with respect to an observing-mirror such as 75, is eliminated and lost motion and vibration reduced to minimum.
The invention may be carried out in other specific ways than those herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
I claim:
1. A variable image-observing device for use in" conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a movable seat-portion and a seat-support therefor; mirrorcarrying means eccentrically-pivoted with respect to the center of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and having a portion extending outwardly beyond the same in position tov swing a movable Amirror in an eccentric path around and with respect to the said seat-portion; a movable mirror carried by the said eccentrically-pivoted mirror-carrying means at a point above the surface of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and swinging with the said mirror-carrying means in an eccentric path around the said seat-portion to venable back-views of a poser thereon to be observed; and automatic actuating-means operatively-interconnecting the said movable seat portion with the said mirrorcarrying means and constructed and arranged to automatically cause the said mirror-carrying means and the said seat-portion to both move simultaneously and also with respect to each other and also with respect to the said seat-support, when the said movable seat-portion is moved.
2. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having'a movable seatportion and a seat-support therefor; mirror-carrying meansk organized as a unit with the said seat-structure and eccentrically-pivoted with respect to the center of the seat-portion thereof and having a portion extending outwardly beyond the boundary of the said seat-portion to swing a movable mirror in an eccentric path around the said seat-portion; a movable mirror carried by the said eccentrically-pivoted mirrorcarrying means at a point above the surface of `the seat-portion of the said seat-structure with i0`` which latter it is organized as a unit, the said movable mirror swinging with the said mirrorcarrying means in an eccentric path around the said seat-portion to enable back-views of a poser thereonto be observed; and automatic actuatingmeans operatively-interconnecting the said movable seat portion with the said mirror-carrying means and constructed and arranged to automatically cause the said mirror-carrying means and the said seat-portion to both move simultaneously and also with respect to each other and also with respect to the said seat-support, when the said movable seat-portion is moved.
3. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a movable seat-portion and a seat-support therefor; mirrorcarrying means eccentrically-pivoted with respect tothe center of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure at a point within the boundary of the same, the said mirror-carrying means having a portion extending outwardly beyond the said seat-portion in position to swing a movable mirror in an eccentric path around the said seatportion; a movable mirror carried by the outwardly projecting portion of the said eccentrically-pivoted mirror-carrying means at a point above the surface of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and swinging with the said mirror-carrying means in an eccentric path around the said seat-portion to enable backviews of a poser thereon to be observed; and automatic actuating-means operatively interconnecting the said movable seat portion with the said mirror-carrying means and constructed and arranged to automatically cause `the said mirror- GAO carrying means and the said seat-portion to both'v move simultaneously and also with :respect-to eachother and also with respect to the said. seat-support, when the said movable seat-portionv i is moved. l
4. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a movable seat-portion and a seat-portion therefor; mirrorcarrying means organized as a unit with the said seat-structure and `eccentrically-pvoted thereto within the'boundary` of the seat-portion thereof, the said mirror-carrying means having a portion extendingoutwardly beyond lthe boundary of the said seat-portion into position to swing a movable mirror in an eccentric path around the said seat-portion; and a movable mirror carried by the said eccentrically-pivoted mirror-carrying means so as'to form a unit with the said seatstructure and located at a point above the surface of the seat-'portion thereof and swinging with the said mirror-carrying means in an eccentric path around the said seat-portion to enable back-views of a `poser thereon to be `observed; and automatic actuating-means operatWely-interconnecting the said vmovable seat portion with the said mirror-carrying means and` constructed and arranged to automatically cause the said mirror-carrying means and the said seat-portiontoV both move simultaneously and also with respect to each other and also with reyspect. to thev said seat-support, when the said movable seat-portion is moved.
5. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising:A a seat-structure having a pivotal seat-portion and a seat-support therefor; rnirror-` carrying means eccentrically-pivoted with respect to the pivot-point of the seat-portion .of the said-structure and having a portion extending outwardly beyond the same in position to swingr a movable mirror in an eccentric path'around the'said pivotal seat-portion; a movable-mirror.
carried by the said eccentrically-pivoted mirrorcarrying `means ata point abovethe surface of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and swinging with the said mirror-carrying means in an` eccentric path around the pivot of the said seat-portion to enable back-views of a poser thereon to be observed; and automatic actuatingmeans operatively-interoonnecting the said pivotal seat-portion with the said pivotal mirrorcarrying means and constructed and arranged to automatically cause the said mirror-carrying 1 lmeans and the said seat-portion to both move simultaneously and also with respect to each other and also with respect to the said seatsupport, when the said movable seat-portion is moved.
6. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a pivotal seat-portion and a seat-support therefor; mirrorcarrying means organized as a unit with the said seat-structure and eccentrically-pivoted with respect to the pivot of the seat-portion thereof and having a portion extending outwardly beyond the boundary of the said seat-portion to swing a movable-mirror in an eccentric path with respect to the pivot of the said seat-portion; a movable-mirror carried by the said eccentricallypivoted mirror-carrying means at a point above the surface of the seat-portion of the said seatstructure with which latter it is organized as a unit, the said movable-mirror swinging with the said mirror-carrying means in an eccentric path around the pivot of the said seat-portion to enable back-views of a poser thereon to be observed; and automatic actuating-means operatively-interconnecting the said pivotal seat-portion with the said pivotal mirror-carrying means and constructed and arranged to automatically cause the said mirror-carrying means and the said seatportion to both move simultaneously and also with respect to each other and also with respect to the said seat-support, whenl the said movable seat-portion is moved.
7. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: aUseat-structure having a pivotal seat-portion anda seat-supportl therefor; mirrorcarrying means eccentrically-pivotedwith respect to .the pivot of., the vseat-portion of the said seatstructure at a ipointwithinthe boundary of the same, the said mirror-carrying means having a portion extendingoutwardly beyond the boundary of the said seat-portion'in position to swing a movable-inirror in an eccentric path ,around the ,pivoth of thesaid seat-portion; `armovablemirror carried by, the vol'itwarolly-projecting'portion ofthe said eccentrically-Vpivoted `mirrorcarrying means at a p oint above thev surface of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and swinging with the said mirror-carrying means in an eccentric path ,around thegpivot ofthe said seat-portion to venable back-views o f a poser thereon tobe observed; and automatic actuatingmeansorneratively interconnecting the said pivotal seat-portion with the said mirror-carrying meansv and constructed and arranged to automaticallyrcause the said mirror-carrying means and the said seat-portion to both'move simultaneously andfalso` with'respect to each other and also with lrespecttothe said seat-support, when the said`movable seat-portion ismoved.`
8. A variable'image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a` seat-structure having a pivotal seat-portion and a seat-support therefor; mir-l rer-carryingmeans organized' as a unit with the' carrying means so as 4to form a unit with theV said seat-structure and located at a point above the surface `of the seat-portion thereof and swinging" with the said'mirror-carrying means in an eccentric path around the pivot of the said seatportion to enable back-views of a poser thereon to be observed; and automatic actuatingmeans operatively-interconnecting the said pivotal -seat-portion with the said mirror-carrying means and constructed and arranged to automatically cause thesaid mirror-carrying means and the said'seat-portion to both move simultaneously and also with respect to'each other and also with respect to 'the said seat-support, when' the said movable seat-portion is moved.
9. A variablev image-observing device forA use in conjunction -with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a seatingsurface; pivotal mirror-carrying meanshaving a portion extending in a generally-horizontal direction beneath the seating-surface of the said Til seat-structure and eccentrically pivotedto the latter at one side of the center thereof and extending beneath the saidseating-surface to the other side of the centerand beyond the edge thereof and thence upwardly to a point above the said seating-surface; and a movable-mirror carried by the portion of the said mirror-carrying means which extends above the seating-surface of the said seat-structure and located on the opposite side of the center of thelatter from the point at which the said mirror-carrying means is pivoted to the seat-structure; the aforesaid parts being constructed and arranged so that, as the said mirror-carrying means and the said movable-mirror are moved in either direction from an intermediate position, the leadingedge of the said movable-mirror is automatically turned into a position more remotefrom the center of the said seat-structure than the trailingedge thereof to enable different angular views of a poser seated on the said seat-structure to be observed.

A variable image-observing device for use in co-njunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a seatingsurface; pivotal mirror-carrying means having a portion extending in a generally-horizontal direction beneath the seating-surface of the said seat-structure and eccentrically pivoted to the latter at one side of the center thereof and extending beneath the said seating-surface to the other side of the center and beyond the edge thereof and thence upwardly to a point above the said seating-surface; and a movable-mirror carried by the portion of the said mirror-carrying means which extends above the seating-surface of the said seat-structure and located on the opposite side of the center of the latter from the point at which the said mirror-carrying means is pivoted to the seat-structure; the said pivotal mirror-carrying means being organized as a unit with the said seat-structure so as to be bodily portable therewith and the aforesaid part being constructed and arranged so that, as the said mirror-carrying means and the said movablemirror are moved in either direction from an intermediate position, the leading-edge of the said movable-mirror is automatically turned into a position more remote from the center of the said seat-structure than the trailing-edge thereof to enable different angular-views of a poser seated on the said seat-structure to be observed.
11. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a movable seat-portion; pivotal mirror-carrying means having a portion extending in a generally-horizontal direction beneath the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and eccentrically pivoted thereto at one side of the center thereof and extending beneath the said seat-portion to the other side of the center and beyond the edge thereof and thence upwardly to a point above the upper surface of the said seat-porion; a movable-mirror carried by the portion of the said mirror-carrying means which extends above the upper surface of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and located on the opposite sides of the center of the latter from the p oint at which the said mirror-carrying means is pivoted to the seat-structure; the aforesaid parts being constructed and arranged so that, as the said mirror-carrying means and the said movablemirror are moved in either direction from an intermediate position, the leading-edge of the saidmovable-mirror is automatically turned into a position more remote from the center of the said seat-structure than the trailing edge thereof to enable different angular views of a poser seated on the said movable seat-portion to be observed; and automatic actuating-means operatively interconnecting the said movable seatportion with the said mirror-carrying means and automatically shifting the latter and the movable-mirror carried thereby relative to the movable seat-portion of the said seat-structure as an incident to the movement of the same.
12. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a pivotal seatportion; pivotal mirror-carrying means having a portion extending in a generally-horizontal direction beneath the pivotal seat-portion of the said seat-structure and eccentrically pivoted to the latter at one side of the pivot-point of the said pivotal seat-portion and extending beneath the same to the other side of the center and beyond the edge thereof and thence upwardly to a point above the upper surface of the said pivotal seatportion; a movable-mirror carried by the portion of the said pivotal mirror-carrying means which extends above the upper surface of the pivotal seat-portion of the said seat-structure and located on the opposite side of the center thereof from the point at which the said mirror-carrying means is pivoted to the seat-structure; the aforesaid parts being constructed and arranged so that as the said pivotal mirror-carrying means and the said movable-mirror are moved in either direction from an intermediate position, the leading-edge of the said movable-mirror is automatically turned into a position more remote from the pivot-point of the said pivotal seat-portion than the trailing edge ofthe said movable-mirror to enable different angular views of a poser seated on the said pivotal seat-portion to be observed; and automatic actuating-means operatively interconnecting the said pivotal seat-portion with the said mirror-carrying means and automatically shifting the latter and the movable-mirror carried thereby relative to the pivotal seat-portion of the said seat-structure as an incident to the turning movement of the same.

A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a pivotal seat-portion; pivotal mirror-carrying means having a portion extending in a generally-horizontal direction beneath the pivotal seat-portion of the said seat-structure and eccentrically pivoted to the latter at one side of the pivot-point o-f the said pivo-tal seat-portion and extending beneath the same to the other side of the center and beyond the edge thereof and thence upwardly to a point above the upper surface of the said pivotal seat-portion; a movable-mirror carried by the portion of the said pivotal mirror-carrying means which extends above the upper surface of the pivotal seat-portion of the said seat-structure and located on the opposite side o-f the pivot thereof from the point at which the said mirror-carrying means is pivoted to the seat-structure; the aforesaid parts being constructed and arranged so that as' the said pivotal mirro-r-carrying means and the said movablemirror are moved in either direction from an intermediate position, the leading-edge of the said movable-mirror is automatically turned into a position more remote from the pivot-point of the said pivotal seat-portion than the trailingedge of the said movable-mirror to enabledifferent angular views of a poser seated on the said pivotal seat-portion to be observed; and automatic actuating-means locatedv on the same side of the pivot-point of the said pivotal seatportion as is the pivot-point of the said pivotal mirror-carrying means and operatively interconnecting the said pivotal seat-portion with the said mirror-carrying means and automatically shifting the latter and the movable-mirror carried thereby relative to the pivotal seat-portion of the said seat-structure as an incident t0 the movement of the same.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a superior device of the character referred to and characterized by simplicity of its automatic mechanism and also by the ruggedness .and reliability thereof.

The particular variable image-observing device herein chosen for illustration constitutes one of the species of a broader invention set forth in my copending application Ser. No. 275,135, filed May 23, 1939, and comprises a substantially-circular skeletonized assembly-plate l5 provided on its under face with a plurality of leg-sockets I6 each of rwhich has entered into it the upper end of a leg or support Il of any suitable type.y The Ysaid assembly-plate l5 has interior portions skeletonized as shown forthe purpose of lightness and clearance. Rigidly mounted upon the upper face of the assembly-plate l5 adjacent oppositerim-portions thereof isa bridge-like seat-carrying' member i8 provided with an upstandingcentral boss i9 having a central bearing-passagell extending vertically and comprising a relativelysmall diameter lower portion 20a, and an upperA 25-` portionb of relatively-large diameter.

Housed Within the relatively-large upper por-- tion ilhof the bearing-passage 20 is a helical spring 22 which encircles the relatively-small diameter lower portion, Zia of the vertical shaft 2l and thrusts at its upper end against the under side ofthe collar-like portion 2lb of the said shaft and yieldingly urges the latter upwardly. Rigidly attached to the upper portion of the 50 vertical shaftv 2| by means of a set screw 24 or its equivalent, is a seat-.carrying head 25 of substanltially,-tu'fo'ular form and having an inturned flange 25 vat its lower end and a disk-like topplate 27 at yits upper end. Rigidly secured to the 55 upper face of the disk-like top-plate 21 is a seat-frame 28 (Fig. 5). Securely attached to the upper surface of the seat-frame 28 just referred to, is a seat 29 preferably suitably padded and having a back-rest 39 against which a poser may lean.
As thus constructed and arranged the seat 29 is free to be turned by a poser about the vertical shaft 2| as a center and in either direction from its normal central position in which it is shown in Figs. l to 5 inclusive. Furthermore the seat 29, and its as ociated parts, is free for slight vertical movement for a purpose as will hereinafter appear, since the vertical shaft 2| is, as before described, capable of slight vertical slid.. ing movement in the boss I9 of the seat-carrying member I8.
Depending from the seat 29 is a cylindrical skirt 3| which serves to conceal the major portion of the internal mechanism beneath the said seat and which is provided with an arcuate slot 35a through which the rear end of a mirrorcarrying arm 32 projects.
Theassembly-plate |5 before described is provided adjacent its front edge with an upstanding boss 33 in which is mounted a stud 34 extending vertically through the forward end of the mirror-carrying arm 32 and serving to pivotally connect the said arm to the seat-structure.
- vIt is to be noted that the pivot point of the mirror-carrying arm 32, namely, the stud 34, is eccentrically positioned with respect to the pivotpoint (the vertical shaft 2|) of the seat 29 and is located within the confines; of the area covered thereby.
Intermediate its inner and outer ends the mirrer-carryingr arm 32 is formed with two laterally-extending fingers, 35-35 each of which carries a roller 36 riding upon the upper surface of a trackway `31 constituted by a portion of the assembly-plate |5 adjacent the rear portion thereof andv extending concentrically with respect to the eCcentrically-located stud 34.
Intermediate the stud` 34 and the vertical shaft 2|, the mirror-carrying arm 32 is provided with ay coupling-slot 38 into which projects a couplingpin 39 rigidly mounted, but with capacity for vertical adjustment, in aboss 49 formed upon the peripheryv of the` seat-carrying head 25 and extending below the inturned flange 26 thereof, as is clearly shown in Fig. 5.
The outer end of the mirror-carrying arm 32 is'formed with an upstanding tubular sleeve 4| into which fits, with capacity for turning movement and vertical withdrawal and installation therein, a tubular stern 42 rigidly attached to and depending from a relatively-short horizontal arm 43 of a` vertical tubular mirror-carrying post 44. Secured to the upper portion of the post 44 is a mirror-frame 45 carrying a mirror 46 in its forward face which mirror. is preferably of the plane type. Mounted in the rear face of the mirrorframe 45 is a magnifying mirror 41 which, in a manner as will hereinafter appear, is adapted to be faced about so as to face towards the seat 29 if desired.
43 carrying a socket 49 mounting an incandescent electric bulb 59 which is adapted to illuminate a poser positioned upon the seat 29, when properly energized in a` manner as will hereinafter appear.
Leading from the socket 49 of the bulb 59 are two wires 5| and 52 soldered or otherwise electrically connected respectively to a conductingrod 53 and a conducting-tube 54 as is clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The said conducting-rod 53 is centrally mounted in the tubular stem 42 and is electrically insulated from the conducting-tube 54 which surrounds it, by an insulating-tube 55. The said conducting-tube 54 is in turn electrically insulated from the tubular stem 42 by means of an interposed insulatingtube 56.
Bearing against the lower end of the conducting-rod 53 is a brush 51 mounted upon the outer end of a resilient metallic arm 58 which is secured at its forwarder fixed end to an insulatingblock 59 secured to the mirror-carrying arm 32 before referred to. The said insulating-block 59 also carries a second resilient metallic arm 60 which carries a brush 6| at its outer end for engagement with the lower edge of the conducting-tube 54. Attached to the resilient arm 58 is an electricywire 62 which leads to one prong B3 of an electric plug 64 of any suitable type and adapted to be plugged into a source of electric current. Similarly the complemental resilient arm 69 has electrically connected to it, an electric Wire 65 leading to one terminal of a tilting mercury switch 66 carried at the outer end of a lever 6 1 which ispivotally mounted upon a radial arm 58 o'ifsettingfrom the seat-carrying member I8 as is shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. Ihe opposite terminal of the mercury switch 66 is connected by means of an electric Wire 69 to the remaining prong 19 of the electricplug 64.
The end of the lever 61 opposite the end at n which the mercury switch 66 is carried, is provided with a roller 1I which is adapted to be engaged by the under surface of the inturned ange 26 of the seat-carrying head 25 before referred to.
For the purpose of normally preventing the turning of the mirror-carrying post 44 relative to the upstanding sleeve 4| of the mirror-carrying 32, the horizontal arm 43 of the said post 44 is provided with la downwardly-extending V-shaped coupling-lug 12 fitting into a similarly shaped but upwardly-opening coupling-notch 13 formed in the upper edge of the said sleeve 4|. In this manner the mirror-carrying post 44 (and the parts carried thereby) is releasably held in definite relationship with respect to the mirrorcarrying arm 32 though its position may be changed by drawingthe said post 44 upwardly to removevthev coupling-lug 12 from the couplingnotch 13.
For the convenience of a hairdresser, beautician or the like,. the mirror-carrying post 44 is preferably provided at a point immediately below the mirror-frame 45 with a tray 14 in which may be kept hairpins, cosmetics, or the like in convenient position for use by a person other than the poser seated upon the seat 29.
As thus constructed and arranged the parts are organized as a unit, though the invention contemplates other forms, provided however that in all instances the mirror-carrying arm 32 or its equivalent is mounted for movement about a center which is eccentric with respect to the center of a seat such for instance as 29 whereby, without the employment of complex mechanisms and without appreciable lost motion, the mirror 46 or its equivalent may b-e moved to change its angular-relationship with respect to the seat and reflect a variety of views to a mirror such as the ordinary dressing table mirror, a suitable wall mirror, or the like.
With the particular mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, immediately that a poser is seated upon the seat 29 the said seat will be depressed by the weight of the person and overcome the helical spring 22 and eiect the tilting of the lever 1 and hence of the mercury switch 6G, with the result that an electric circuit through the bulb 5t! will be completed and the said bulb will be energized to illuminate the rear of the poser.
After a poser is seated upon the seat 29, such poser may cause the mirror 46 to sweep part way around the rear of the said seat by turning the latter. The turning of the seat in a clockwise direction from its intermediate position will cause the mirror 46 and associated parts to swing around the stud 34 in a counterclockwise direction into the position shown, for instance, by the broken lines A in Fig. 3. In a similar manner a counterclockwise turning of the seat 29 and its associated parts will effect the clockwise movement of the mirror 46 and associated parts into a position such, for instance, as that indicated by the broken lines B in Fig. 3; it being understood, of course, that the mirror 46 may assume substantially an infinite number of angular relationships dependent upon the degree to which the said seat 29 or its equivalent is moved.
For the purpose of convenience of description let it be assumed that the mirror 46 has been shifted into the position A in which itiwill be noted that light from the rear or partial prole of a poser on the said seat will be reflected along the line c to the said mirror and will then be reected back along the line d to the observing- .mirror 15 wherein the poser may observe the reflection.
If desired, a poser may face toward the mirror 45 and observe therein reflections of the rear and partial sides of his or her person as reflected from the mirror 15.
In the event that it is desired to bring a mirror closer to the poser to increase the scale of the reflection, the mirror-carrying post 44 may be slightly lifted to disengage the coupling-lug 12 from the coupling-notch 13, and then turned through an arc of about 180 into the position in which it is indicated by broken lines in Fig. 2.
As before noted and as will be apparent from the foregoing considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, I have discovered that by mounting the mirror 46 or its equivalent for movement eccentrically with respect to the center of the seat 29 or its equivalent, much of the complex mechanism which would otherwise be required to effect the proper angular relationship of the mirror 46 or its equivalent, with respect to an observing-mirror such as 75, is eliminated and lost motion and vibration reduced to minimum.
The invention may be carried out in other specific ways than those herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
I claim:
1. A variable image-observing device for use in" conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a movable seat-portion and a seat-support therefor; mirrorcarrying means eccentrically-pivoted with respect to the center of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and having a portion extending outwardly beyond the same in position tov swing a movable Amirror in an eccentric path around and with respect to the said seat-portion; a movable mirror carried by the said eccentrically-pivoted mirror-carrying means at a point above the surface of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and swinging with the said mirror-carrying means in an eccentric path around the said seat-portion to venable back-views of a poser thereon to be observed; and automatic actuating-means operatively-interconnecting the said movable seat portion with the said mirrorcarrying means and constructed and arranged to automatically cause the said mirror-carrying means and the said seat-portion to both move simultaneously and also with respect to each other and also with respect to the said seat-support, when the said movable seat-portion is moved.
2. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having'a movable seatportion and a seat-support therefor; mirror-carrying meansk organized as a unit with the said seat-structure and eccentrically-pivoted with respect to the center of the seat-portion thereof and having a portion extending outwardly beyond the boundary of the said seat-portion to swing a movable mirror in an eccentric path around the said seat-portion; a movable mirror carried by the said eccentrically-pivoted mirrorcarrying means at a point above the surface of `the seat-portion of the said seat-structure with i0`` which latter it is organized as a unit, the said movable mirror swinging with the said mirrorcarrying means in an eccentric path around the said seat-portion to enable back-views of a poser thereonto be observed; and automatic actuatingmeans operatively-interconnecting the said movable seat portion with the said mirror-carrying means and constructed and arranged to automatically cause the said mirror-carrying means and the said seat-portion to both move simultaneously and also with respect to each other and also with respect to the said seat-support, when the said movable seat-portion is moved.
3. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a movable seat-portion and a seat-support therefor; mirrorcarrying means eccentrically-pivoted with respect tothe center of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure at a point within the boundary of the same, the said mirror-carrying means having a portion extending outwardly beyond the said seat-portion in position to swing a movable mirror in an eccentric path around the said seatportion; a movable mirror carried by the outwardly projecting portion of the said eccentrically-pivoted mirror-carrying means at a point above the surface of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and swinging with the said mirror-carrying means in an eccentric path around the said seat-portion to enable backviews of a poser thereon to be observed; and automatic actuating-means operatively interconnecting the said movable seat portion with the said mirror-carrying means and constructed and arranged to automatically cause `the said mirror- GAO carrying means and the said seat-portion to both'v move simultaneously and also with :respect-to eachother and also with respect to the said. seat-support, when the said movable seat-portionv i is moved. l
4. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a movable seat-portion and a seat-portion therefor; mirrorcarrying means organized as a unit with the said seat-structure and `eccentrically-pvoted thereto within the'boundary` of the seat-portion thereof, the said mirror-carrying means having a portion extendingoutwardly beyond lthe boundary of the said seat-portion into position to swing a movable mirror in an eccentric path around the said seat-portion; and a movable mirror carried by the said eccentrically-pivoted mirror-carrying means so as'to form a unit with the said seatstructure and located at a point above the surface of the seat-'portion thereof and swinging with the said mirror-carrying means in an eccentric path around the said seat-portion to enable back-views of a `poser thereon to be `observed; and automatic actuating-means operatWely-interconnecting the said vmovable seat portion with the said mirror-carrying means and` constructed and arranged to automatically cause the said mirror-carrying means and the said seat-portiontoV both move simultaneously and also with respect to each other and also with reyspect. to thev said seat-support, when the said movable seat-portion is moved.
5. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising:A a seat-structure having a pivotal seat-portion and a seat-support therefor; rnirror-` carrying means eccentrically-pivoted with respect to the pivot-point of the seat-portion .of the said-structure and having a portion extending outwardly beyond the same in position to swingr a movable mirror in an eccentric path'around the'said pivotal seat-portion; a movable-mirror.
carried by the said eccentrically-pivoted mirrorcarrying `means ata point abovethe surface of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and swinging with the said mirror-carrying means in an` eccentric path around the pivot of the said seat-portion to enable back-views of a poser thereon to be observed; and automatic actuatingmeans operatively-interoonnecting the said pivotal seat-portion with the said pivotal mirrorcarrying means and constructed and arranged to automatically cause the said mirror-carrying 1 lmeans and the said seat-portion to both move simultaneously and also with respect to each other and also with respect to the said seatsupport, when the said movable seat-portion is moved.
6. A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a pivotal seat-portion and a seat-support therefor; mirrorcarrying means organized as a unit with the said seat-structure and eccentrically-pivoted with respect to the pivot of the seat-portion thereof and having a portion extending outwardly beyond the boundary of the said seat-portion to swing a movable-mirror in an eccentric path with respect to the pivot of the said seat-portion; a movable-mirror carried by the said eccentricallypivoted mirror-carrying means at a point above the surface of the seat-portion of the said seatstructure with which latter it is organized as a unit, the said movable-mirror swinging with the said mirror-carrying means in an eccentric path around the pivot of the said seat-portion to enable back-views of a poser thereon to be observed; and automatic actuating-means operatively-interconnecting the said pivotal seat-portion with the said pivotal mirror-carrying means and constructed and arranged to automatically cause the said mirror-carrying means and the said seatportion to both move simultaneously and also with respect to each other and also with respect to the said seat-support, whenl the said movable seat-portion is moved.
7. A variable'image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a` seat-structure having a pivotal seat-portion and a seat-support therefor; mir-l rer-carryingmeans organized' as a unit with the' carrying means so as 4to form a unit with theV said seat-structure and located at a point above the surface `of the seat-portion thereof and swinging" with the said'mirror-carrying means in an eccentric path around the pivot of the said seatportion to enable back-views of a poser thereon to be observed; and automatic actuatingmeans operatively-interconnecting the said pivotal -seat-portion with the said mirror-carrying means and constructed and arranged to automatically cause thesaid mirror-carrying means and the said'seat-portion to both move simultaneously and also with respect to'each other and also with respect to 'the said seat-support, when' the said movable seat-portion is moved.

A variablev image-observing device forA use in conjunction -with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a seatingsurface; pivotal mirror-carrying meanshaving a portion extending in a generally-horizontal direction beneath the seating-surface of the said Til seat-structure and eccentrically pivotedto the latter at one side of the center thereof and extending beneath the saidseating-surface to the other side of the centerand beyond the edge thereof and thence upwardly to a point above the said seating-surface; and a movable-mirror carried by the portion of the said mirror-carrying means which extends above the seating-surface of the said seat-structure and located on the opposite side of the center of thelatter from the point at which the said mirror-carrying means is pivoted to the seat-structure; the aforesaid parts being constructed and arranged so that, as the said mirror-carrying means and the said movable-mirror are moved in either direction from an intermediate position, the leadingedge of the said movable-mirror is automatically turned into a position more remotefrom the center of the said seat-structure than the trailingedge thereof to enable different angular views of a poser seated on the said seat-structure to be observed.

A variable image-observing device for use in co-njunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a seatingsurface; pivotal mirror-carrying means having a portion extending in a generally-horizontal direction beneath the seating-surface of the said seat-structure and eccentrically pivoted to the latter at one side of the center thereof and extending beneath the said seating-surface to the other side of the center and beyond the edge thereof and thence upwardly to a point above the said seating-surface; and a movable-mirror carried by the portion of the said mirror-carrying means which extends above the seating-surface of the said seat-structure and located on the opposite side of the center of the latter from the point at which the said mirror-carrying means is pivoted to the seat-structure; the said pivotal mirror-carrying means being organized as a unit with the said seat-structure so as to be bodily portable therewith and the aforesaid part being constructed and arranged so that, as the said mirror-carrying means and the said movablemirror are moved in either direction from an intermediate position, the leading-edge of the said movable-mirror is automatically turned into a position more remote from the center of the said seat-structure than the trailing-edge thereof to enable different angular-views of a poser seated on the said seat-structure to be observed.

A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a movable seat-portion; pivotal mirror-carrying means having a portion extending in a generally-horizontal direction beneath the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and eccentrically pivoted thereto at one side of the center thereof and extending beneath the said seat-portion to the other side of the center and beyond the edge thereof and thence upwardly to a point above the upper surface of the said seat-porion; a movable-mirror carried by the portion of the said mirror-carrying means which extends above the upper surface of the seat-portion of the said seat-structure and located on the opposite sides of the center of the latter from the p oint at which the said mirror-carrying means is pivoted to the seat-structure; the aforesaid parts being constructed and arranged so that, as the said mirror-carrying means and the said movablemirror are moved in either direction from an intermediate position, the leading-edge of the saidmovable-mirror is automatically turned into a position more remote from the center of the said seat-structure than the trailing edge thereof to enable different angular views of a poser seated on the said movable seat-portion to be observed; and automatic actuating-means operatively interconnecting the said movable seatportion with the said mirror-carrying means and automatically shifting the latter and the movable-mirror carried thereby relative to the movable seat-portion of the said seat-structure as an incident to the movement of the same.

A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a pivotal seatportion; pivotal mirror-carrying means having a portion extending in a generally-horizontal direction beneath the pivotal seat-portion of the said seat-structure and eccentrically pivoted to the latter at one side of the pivot-point of the said pivotal seat-portion and extending beneath the same to the other side of the center and beyond the edge thereof and thence upwardly to a point above the upper surface of the said pivotal seatportion; a movable-mirror carried by the portion of the said pivotal mirror-carrying means which extends above the upper surface of the pivotal seat-portion of the said seat-structure and located on the opposite side of the center thereof from the point at which the said mirror-carrying means is pivoted to the seat-structure; the aforesaid parts being constructed and arranged so that as the said pivotal mirror-carrying means and the said movable-mirror are moved in either direction from an intermediate position, the leading-edge of the said movable-mirror is automatically turned into a position more remote from the pivot-point of the said pivotal seat-portion than the trailing edge ofthe said movable-mirror to enable different angular views of a poser seated on the said pivotal seat-portion to be observed; and automatic actuating-means operatively interconnecting the said pivotal seat-portion with the said mirror-carrying means and automatically shifting the latter and the movable-mirror carried thereby relative to the pivotal seat-portion of the said seat-structure as an incident to the turning movement of the same.

A variable image-observing device for use in conjunction with an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a pivotal seat-portion; pivotal mirror-carrying means having a portion extending in a generally-horizontal direction beneath the pivotal seat-portion of the said seat-structure and eccentrically pivoted to the latter at one side of the pivot-point o-f the said pivo-tal seat-portion and extending beneath the same to the other side of the center and beyond the edge thereof and thence upwardly to a point above the upper surface of the said pivotal seat-portion; a movable-mirror carried by the portion of the said pivotal mirror-carrying means which extends above the upper surface of the pivotal seat-portion of the said seat-structure and located on the opposite side o-f the pivot thereof from the point at which the said mirror-carrying means is pivoted to the seat-structure; the aforesaid parts being constructed and arranged so that as' the said pivotal mirro-r-carrying means and the said movablemirror are moved in either direction from an intermediate position, the leading-edge of the said movable-mirror is automatically turned into a position more remote from the pivot-point of the said pivotal seat-portion than the trailingedge of the said movable-mirror to enabledifferent angular views of a poser seated on the said pivotal seat-portion to be observed; and automatic actuating-means locatedv on the same side of the pivot-point of the said pivotal seatportion as is the pivot-point of the said pivotal mirror-carrying means and operatively interconnecting the said pivotal seat-portion with the said mirror-carrying means and automatically shifting the latter and the movable-mirror carried thereby relative to the pivotal seat-portion of the said seat-structure as an incident t0 the movement of the same.

A variable! image-observing device for use in conjunction With an observing-mirror and comprising: a seat-structure having a seatingsurface; pivotal mirror-carrying means having a portion extending in a generally-horizontal direction beneath the seating-surface o-f the said seat-structure and eccentrically pivoted to the latter at one side of the center thereof and extending beneath the said seating-surface to the other side of the center and beyond the edge thereof'and thence upwardly to apoint above .the said seating-surface, the portion of the said mirror-carrying means which extends above the said seat-surface, including a vertically-extensible member; and a movable-mirror carried by the vertically-extensible member of the said mirror-carrying means which extends above the seating-surface of the said seat-structure and ing-edge of the said movable-mirror is automati'cally turned intoI a position more remote fromthe centerof the'said seat-structure than the trailing-edge vthereof to enable different anguiar views of a poser seated on the said seatstructure tov be observed.
